I do not choose to be a common person

It is my right to be uncommon---if I can

I seek opportunity---not security

I do not wish to be a kept citizen

humbled and dulled by having the state look after me

I want to take the calculated risk

to dream and to build

to fail and to succeed

I refuse to barter incentive for a dole

I prefer the challenges of life to the guaranteed existence

the thrill of fulfillment to the stale calm of Utopia

I will not trade my freedom for beneficence

nor my dignity for a handout

I will never cower before any master

nor bend to any threat

It is my heritage to stand erect, proud, and unafraid

to think and act for myself

to enjoy the benefit of my creations

and to face the world boldly

and say:

“This, with God’s help, I have done.”

1776年，美國獨立前夜，一本不到20頁的小冊子開始流傳，小冊子名為《常識》。作者湯瑪斯·潘恩用樸素的文字激勵人們反抗奴役。北美獨立戰爭期間，《常識》一書對民眾的影響力僅次於《聖經》。1904年，美國《企業家》雜誌選用《常識》中的一段話作為發刊詞，此後百餘年中滄海桑田、物是人非，但扉頁上的這段話卻從來沒有改變，它被稱為企業家誓言：

我是不會選擇做一個普通人的

如果我能夠做到的話

我有權成為一位不尋常的人

我尋找機會但我不尋求安穩

我不希望在國家的照顧下成為一個有保障的國民

那將被人瞧不起而使我感到痛苦不堪

我要做有意義的冒險

我要夢想我要創造

我要失敗我也要成功

我拒絕用刺激來換取施捨

我寧願向生活挑戰而不過有保障的生活

寧願要達到目的時的激動而不願要烏托邦式毫無生氣的平靜
